Monastery of St. Catherine of Karofyllatou
112, Kapodistriou St
The Church of St. Catherine is located in the centre of the Old Town of Corfu, near the Palace of St. Michael and St. George. It was built in 1690 at the expense of the hieromonk Nicodemus Karofyllatos, a refugee from Crete, as commemorated by an inscribed plate above the entrance of the north wall. The church was founded on 1 August 1690 and was completed on 17 November of the same year. It functioned as a male monastery for many years.
It is a small building complex which includes the temple and a three-storey building adjoining it on the north side. The church belongs to the type of single-aisled, wooden-roofed basilica. On the eastern side of the building, there is a perforated wall bell tower. In the church, there was an exquisite icon of John the Baptist which is a work created by a workshop in Constantinople in the first half of the 14th century which is now kept in the Church of the Holy Fathers. The icons of the wood-carved iconostasis are the work of Stephano Tzangarola, a Cretan-born painter. The gynaeconite was completely reconstructed during the recent restoration works of the complex under the Partnership Agreement for the Development Framework programme (2014-2021).
