The museum of the Corfu Philharmonic Society presents the history of the island's oldest philharmonic, focusing on the musical life of the Ionian Islands and Greece in the19th century.The museum was inaugurated in 2010, on the 170th anniversary of the Philharmonic Society founded in 1840. It was named after the important Corfiot composer and music teacher, Nikolaos Chalikiopoulos Mantzaros, first artistic director and life president.
The Museum is housed in the building where the Philharmonic has its seat, at 10 Nikiforou Theotoki St. It displays old and rare musical instruments, schoolbooks, photographic material, scores, audio documents and visual works. The exhibition is organized into the following sections: i) The institution’s foundation, administration and organisation, including material on the early course of the Philharmonic and its organisation); ii) Its educational work, displaying information and data on the educational activities of the institution; iii) The concerts and the Philharmonic as a concert organisation of vocal and instrumental music; iv) The band, including information on the repertoire and the activities of the Philharmonic band; and v) Important personalities and their works, including famous composers and music educators who were associated with the Philharmonic. These composers and music educators played an important role in the evolution of “Entekhno” (art song-orchestral music with elements from Greek folk rhythm and melody) in Greece in the 19th century.
