"Duomo"Cathedral of Saints James and Christopher

Saint James Sq
The Cathedral of Saints Christopher and Saint James is located in the Town Hall Square near the old San GiacomoTheatre. The church was consecrated in 1553 by Archbishop Milo. Originally it was a church of relatively small dimensions. In 1571, during the second siege of the town by the Ottomans, it suffered serious damage. In the 17th century it was decided to convert it into a cathedral for the Catholics of the town, and for this purpose it was expanded.During its many years of operation, it underwent several modifications and renovations. It is a single-aisled basilica with six chapels on the long sides. These chapels communicate with the main area through large arched openings. On the west side, the facade of the church is divided into three parts with Tuscan pilasters which lead to a triangular pediment. Visitors may enter the church through three doors. In the southwestern corner of the church, there is a tower of neogothic morphology. Its bell tower is relatively small with a pyramidal end and is located on the east side. The sanctuary is polygonal and particularly sizeable. Above the entrance there is a small balcony where the church instrument is located. The walls are adorned with various architectural sculptures together with votive and funerary inscriptions. The chapels of the church are dedicated to Saint Spyridon and Saint Arsenios, to Jesus Christ the King, to the Immaculate and Pure Theotokos, to Saint Theresia, to Saint Dorea and to Our Lady of Health. The altars in the first two chapels are newer and wooden while the rest are stone ones. Despite successive interventions, its interior gives visitors a sense of the 17th-century baroque style.
