Panagia Mandrakina church

Garden of the People
The picturesque chapel of Panagia Mandrakina was named after the miraculous icon of the Mother of God. According to tradition, it was found in fishermen's nets in Mandraki which is the harbour of the Old Fortress of Corfu. The church is located next to the garden of the Palace of St. Michael and St. George and the Garden of the People, in Boschetto area (garden). It has a rectangular shape, ends up to a pediment and its elaborate bell tower adjoins to the building. In front of the west entrance, there is the church’s small courtyard. The church was built in 1722 by the priest Anastasios Gialinas. In 1860, it was renovated based on the plans drawn up by the Corfiot architect Ioannis Chronis. Panagia Mandrakina suffered major damage that was caused by the bombardment of Corfu during World War II. The church was restored and took its final form in 1950.
