St. Nicholas Gate (Porta San Nicola)

St. Nicholas Gate (Porta S. Nicolo) is the most ancient gate of the city surrounded by fort walls. It is located on the northern side of Spianada square, at the base of the walls below the level of the coastal road. It was named after the church of St. Nicholas. At first, the gate was located on the venetian building which once housed the military hospital but no longer exists. The gate façade a’ looks on the sea while façade b’ on the mainland.
