Kerkyraikos Gymnastikos Syllogos (Corfu Sports Club)

1, Stamatiou Dessyla St
The building of the Corfu Gymnastics Association (Kerkyraikos Gymnastikos Syllogos) is located on 1 Stamatiou Desylla St., at the lowest level of the plateau of Agios Athanasios, near the Municipal Theatre. The plateau is part of the western fortification of the Old Town, between the bastions of Sarantaris and Raimondos. It was named after the church of Agios Athanasios located there. The low square of the plateau protected the Royal Gate (Porta Reale) in the northwest which was a short distance away. The Corfu Gymnastics Association, which was founded in 1893, has been housed there since 1902. The premises of the association were constructed in 1905 thanks to a donation of Pavlos Filis. During the German bombing raids of World War II, the building of the Corfu Gymnastics Association was severely damaged and its archive was destroyed. In 1945, the Association reopened including track, cricket and volleyball departments, while in 1946 the basketball department was added. The building has been renovated and now has offices, changing rooms, a canteen, auxiliary areas and a central, large room with a capacity of 120 people. The Association currently has three departments i.e. the basketball, cricket and track and field departments.
