Church of the High Virgin (‘Ipsili Theotokos’) and Saint John the Merciful

Agias Sofias St
The Church of the Theotokos Yspili (Virgin Mary) and St. John the Merciful is located in the Jewish quarter. The church, which is the property of the Theotokis family, was built in 1730. From 1790 the ownership was transferred to the wine makers’ and wine merchants’ guild that supported the church financially. In 1808, the number of wine merchants who supported the church was eighty-three. This was a very small church. Above the main entrance there is a semicircular window with a railing. One of the relics of the church is the gold-plated gospel which was made in 1827 by Nikolaos Papageorgiou from Kalavryta of Epirus. The church is also dedicated to St. John the Merciful, who was Patriarch of Alexandria in the period 610 to 619. BIBLIOGRAPHY 1) Παπαγεωργίου Σ.
