Saint Paraskevi church and church of Saint John the Theologian

Porta Remounda
The Church of St. Paraskevi and St. John the Theologian is located on Gilford St. in Porta Remounda district. The first reference to the church dates back to 1573 and is included in a document, according to which Christoforos Kontokalis, a Corfiot nobleman bearing the honorary title of "cavalier", constructed a second church dedicated to St. John the Theologian and Evangelist. It was a synodal church which belonged to a noble brotherhood and had assets. In 1943, it was burned during the German bombing raids. When the war came to an end, the building was restored with the assistance of believers, the sale of its assets, and donations by Corfiots. Today, the church features a new wood-carved iconostasis and most icons have been painted employing Byzantine style. A bell tower has also been constructed according to the Ionian standards. Every year, in the church of St.Paraskevi are held the reception of the Holy Fire and the Resurrection Service of the Lord, presided over by the Metropolitan of Corfu.
