Church of Saint Eleftherios and Saint Anna
8, Kalochairetou St
The Church of St. Eleftherios and St. Anna is located in the Old Town of Corfu between Agios Spyridon street (facade of the church) and Kalochairetou street.
The history of the church begins in 1700 when Theodorella, daughter of Nikolaos Vervitsiotis, converted her house near Spianada into a church dedicated to St. Eleftherios and St. Anna. In 1714, she decided to make the church a confraternity and addressed the guild of the craftsmen (cheese makers and groceries) who accepted the offer. Notary Ioannis Tzagarolas drafted up the agreement. The Code of the church provides interesting information on the church’s history in the early 18th century up to the present day as well as on the operation and activity of its founding brotherhood.
The form that the church had in 1718 was depicted in an icon created by the painter Konstantinos Kontarinis (1679-1738) referring to the miracle of his son's rescue. Notary books at that time refer to the painted decoration of the church since 1765 when its renovation had been completed. In 1825 the church lost its fraternal elements and became a parish one.
According to the stone inscription built into its facade, the church was destroyed due to the bombardment of Corfu on 14 September 1943 and the it was restored in 1950 at the expense of the faithful.
