Church of the Holy Fathers and Saint Arsenios chapel

Agion Pateron St
The Church of the Holy Fathers in the namesake district is one of the most impressive churches of Corfu. The church is dedicated to the 318 Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea and is celebrated forty-two days after Easter. The church also honours St. Arsenios (876-953), the first bishop of Corfu. The construction of the church dates back to the 16th century. At first, the church was a synodal one (di confraternita) owned by merchants, and in 1860 it became the property of the Epirus monk Zamanos. The exterior architectural features are reminiscent of the monuments of Late Baroque, as the façade of the church is divided into three sections including Tuscan-style pilasters and revives Palladian architecture. The church was destroyed during the Second World War and was restored in 1990. Inside, a few parts of the frescoes are preserved. Today the church houses the Ecclesiastical Collection of the Metropolitan Church of Corfu. BIBLIOGRAPHY 1) Παπαγεωργίου Σ.
