House Gallina
10, Kapodistriou St.
Giallinas Mansion is located in the town’s upper square, on 14 Kapodistriou St. At first, it belonged to the Quartano family. The mansion was named after its later tenants, the Giallinas family. The descendant of the family was the watercolorist Angelos Giallinas (1857-1939), a renowned painter in Europe. The famous writer Konstantinos Theotokis, who died there on 1 July 1923, lived in Giallinas mansion during the last months of his life.
Giallinas mansion is one of the most important buildings of urban architecture in Corfu town. It is a three-storey building with an arched porch on the ground floor and a balcony on the first floor. The Rikki mansion located on Moustoxidi St. is of similar typology.
Today, the building has undergone several modifications and additions, starting from the period of Venetian rule when two separate buildings joined together and a gallery was added. In the 19th century, thanks to the intervention and drawings drawn up by the important Corfiot architect, Ioannis Chronis, the building’s volume was increased by merging two adjacent buildings.
Giallinas Mansion is a declared historical monument under Ministerial Decision issued by the Ministry of Culture/ΑΡΧ/Β1/Φ33/30703/647/13-9-1989 - Government Gazette 741/Β/ 4-10-1989 and has been under renovation in order to house the Giallinas art gallery.
