Campiello, Cofineta, Church of the Holy Apostles, Holy Fathers Church
Old Town of Corfu
Campiello (Obriovouni) is a densely populated hill northeast of Corfu and one of the
oldest quarters in the Old Town. The hill is reached by steps, uphill narrow streets
(cantounia) and squares. In the area, there are some impressive buildings featuring
Gothic arches on the walls, decorative stone heads or “moroi/mouronia” as Corfiots
like to call them, and inner courtyards with wells and carved doors dating back to the
Venetian rule. The churches of the 15th and 16th centuries, such as Panagia Kremasti,
are also noteworthy. The church gave its name to the quarter where it was located.
The typical layout of a quarter included a small square in the centre and sometimes
mansions and houses belonging to the wealthy. The aforementioned spatial
organisation of the quarters is reminiscent of the Venetian Campielli that gave the
name to the quarters.
The quarter of Agioi Pateres (Holy Fathers), another settled hill in the Old Town, was
built around the 15th-century Church of the Holy Fathers which houses the
Ecclesiastical Museum of the Metropolis, and is mainly surrounded by working-class
homes.
Between the quarter of Agioi Pateres and Campiello lies the smaller quarter of Agioi
Apostoloi (Holy Apostles). The quarter of Agioi Apostoloi also shares the same
layout having the square as the centre of the quarter, and is surrounded by notable
buildings dating back to British rule. Last but not least, Kofineta quarter -at the end of
Liston square- featuring a square of the same name with the distinguishing palmtree
and the bust of the Corfiot Georgios Rallis, second Prime Minister of Greece, is
another of the most picturesque quarters in the Old Town.
