Court building
1, Zavitsanou St.
The building of the Old Courthouse is located in the old harbour square in Spilia at 1 Konstantinos Zavitsianos St. From the 16th century until 1786, there were granaries (Fontego) in this place which were transferred from Spianada to the area of Spilia as part of the defensive restructuring of the city. The buildings of the old granaries were converted into houses for the poor and immigrants, while the buildings’ ground floors were used as coffeehouses, grocery stores and other types of shops. The only part of the old granaries that survives today is the entrance gate near Spilia Gate depicting the emblem of Corfu.
The current building of the Courthouse was built in 1935-1938 as a branch of the National Bank of Greece (NBG) and was designed in classical style featuring an Ionic loggia on the first floor. From 1953 it housed the courthouses until the construction of the new Courthouse in 2012. Since then, the building has been owned by the Region of the Ionian Islands to house its headquarters following reconstruction and modernisation works.
