Gate of the New Fortress

New Fortress Ꙛ This point of interest includes holographic video
The New Venetian Fortress is considered to be a typical example of the fort architecture prevailing during Venetian rule (1576-1578) and features two gates. The first one looks towards the town (south gate) and the second one towards the harbour (north gate). The New Fortress gate was constructed by Ferdinande (Ferrante) Vitteli and was completed in approximately 1577. The gate bears an inscription and features a cornice depicting the winged Lion of St. Mark which was the emblem of the Most Serene Republic of Venice (La Serenissima).
