Heroes of Cypriot Struggle Square or otherwise known as “Plakada tou Agiou”)

Heroes Square
The Heroes of the Cyprus Struggle Square on Nikiforos Theotokis Street is one of the few squares located in the center of the Old Town of Corfu. In the past, the square was called "Sternes" (cisterns) because of the tanks built under Venetian rule to collect water water supply purposes. The square was later named "del Banco" due to the historic building of the Ionian Bank that was built in its western part in the 19th century. The Museum of Banknotes is housed in it today. The square is now known as "Plakada tou Agiou" (Square of the Saint) because the church of Agios Spyridon is nearby. In the 18th century, Panagia ton Xenon (Church of the Virgin Mary of the Foreigners) or Kyra Faneromeni was built at its northern end. The church of Saint Jogh the Baptist (Agios Ioannis Prodromos) is right opposite the square since the 16th century. The statue of George Theotokis (1844-1916), Corfiot politician and prime minister of the country, is placed in the center of the square.
